Telephone Hotline - A dedicated telephone line that is advertised and may be operated as a crisis hotline for emergency counseling or as a referral resource for callers with mental health problems.

Therapeutic Foster Care - A service which provides treatment for troubled children within private homes of trained families. The approach combines the normalizing influence of family-based care with specialized treatment interventions, thereby creating a therapeutic environment in the context of a nurturing family home.

Third Party Payer - A public or private organization that is responsible for the health care expenses of another entity.

Thought Disorder - Mental disorders characterized by an impaired perception of reality, such as schizophrenia.

Tic - An involuntary muscle spasm, usually of the face, head, neck or shoulder; a twitch.

Titration - A stepwise increase or decrease in the prescribed dose of a medication.

Toke - To inhale marijuana smoke or take a hit or turn.
“I have this great weed here. Would anyone like a toke?”

Transitional Living - Similar to extended care offering 10-12 hours of structured therapeutic groups per week. Typically the focus of therapy is on topics like communication skills, healthy boundaries, creating healthy support networks and life skills. Clients are able to work, go to school and volunteer. They have a lot of opportunity to spend time in their community and practice the skills of recovery they have learned while still having a strong therapeutic environment to return to. Length of stay will vary from 1-3 months.

Transference - Unconsciously attributing to others the feelings and attitudes that were originally associated with important people in your early life, such as your parents or siblings.

Trichotillomania - Mental disorder characterized by an uncontrollable urge to pull out your hair.

Tricyclic Antidepressants - An older class of antidepressants used to treat depression by increasing levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine

Triple C’s - Coricidin HBP, for coughs and colds (CCC) is meant as a mucus reducing agent. Taking more than the recommended dose of coricidin cough medicine can have a hallucinogenic effect. Also known as Skittles, Robo Trip, and Poor Mans X.
